Abstract:
As networks grow and evolve, there are various emerging applications and services available. Taking the Internet as an example, real-time applications (e.g., VoIP and online video clips) nowadays become increasingly popular besides traditional data transmission services. Given multi-service networks, the current flow control approach is far from sufficient. In this seminar, we will thus present a manageable and scalable flow control framework for Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in multi-service networks. It involves efficient and fair flow control schemes, consisting of both source algorithm and congestion feedback mechanism, and either layered or cross-layered resource allocation architecture for future communication networks such as Internet and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). The emphasis is to support multitude of applications or services with different QoS characteristics for both elastic and inelastic traffic. Specifically, we have also designed and implemented a first-ever practical transmission protocol that is able to handle inelastic traffic in WSNs by using stochastic network optimization and backpressure-based techniques.
